Hazza bin Zayed reviews efforts to protect groundwater resources and enhance water security in the Al Ain region

Al Ain, May 5 / WAM / His Highness Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Ain Region, reviewed efforts to protect groundwater resources and enhance water security in the Al Ain Region through strategic initiatives aimed at rationalizing water consumption, applying the latest irrigation solutions and technologies, and plans to reuse treated water for industrial purposes.
This came while His Highness received a delegation from the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, headed by Her Excellency Dr. Sheikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of the Authority, to review current and future projects and initiatives related to enhancing the sustainability of groundwater reserves, raising the readiness of the protection system in emergency situations, and strengthening subterranean monitoring systems to protect water resources from depletion, pollution, and various potential environmental challenges.
His Highness was briefed on the efforts made by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and other concerned authorities in achieving a balance between the requirements of development and the sustainability of natural resources, stressing the importance of adopting innovative solutions and strengthening community partnerships to establish a culture of water responsibility and ensure water security for future generations, in line with the vision of the emirate and the UAE in the field of environmental sustainability.
The meeting also discussed ways to enhance control over groundwater uses and limit the practice of digging unlicensed wells in farms, which contributes to protecting the groundwater reserve and ensuring the sustainable use of this vital resource, through campaigns to raise the level of community awareness among farmers and livestock breeders about the negative effects of random wells on the sustainability of water resources, in addition to encouraging consumption rationalization practices through guidance and incentive programmes.
During the meeting, His Highness was briefed on the most prominent future directions of the Authority within its strategy 2026-2030, and the specific programs and projects it includes to protect natural resources, enhance water security, and support the sustainability of ecosystems in the Al Ain region.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the members of the Authority’s delegation expressed their thanks and appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his continued support for the Authority’s programs and projects, stressing the Authority’s commitment to continuing its efforts to achieve the goals of environmental sustainability and preserve natural resources for present and future generations.
The meeting was attended by His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Engineer Faisal Ali Al Hammadi, Executive Director of the Environmental Quality Sector at the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, and a number of officials from the Authority.
