The Security Council condemns the attack on the Barakah nuclear plant and affirms its support for the sovereignty of the UAE

New York, May 27 / WAM / Members of the United Nations Security Council condemned, in the strongest terms, the drone attack that targeted an electricity generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra region in the United Arab Emirates, stressing that the attack constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and entails grave risks that threaten civilian lives, infrastructure and the environment.

In a statement issued last night, Council members expressed their deep concern about this dangerous escalation, demanding an immediate and permanent cessation of all attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure in the UAE, including attacks and threats targeting peaceful nuclear facilities.

The members of the Security Council recalled the relevant Council resolutions and the resolutions of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency, expressing their concern about such attacks or threats targeting peaceful nuclear facilities.

Council members also took note of the statement of the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, in which he expressed deep concern about the accident, stressing that any military activity that threatens nuclear safety is unacceptable.

The members of the Security Council called on states to adhere to the highest standards of nuclear safety, security and safeguards, and to refrain from any actions that might jeopardize nuclear safety and security.

Council members stressed that the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant was designed, constructed and managed in accordance with the highest international standards and under the supervision of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation in the UAE, and in line with the safety standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The members of the Security Council renewed their full commitment to supporting the maintenance of peace and stability in the Middle East, affirming their strong support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the United Arab Emirates, in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter.
