The UAE chairs the ICRC in search and rescue systems

Abu Dhabi, July 6 / WAM / The UAE is chairing the International Committee for Artificial Intelligence in Rescue and Rescue systems, after the announcement of the International Cos -Sarsat organization during its virtual meeting on June 13 for the formation of an international working committee specialized in artificial intelligence applications within the satellite systems for search and rescue, after the great success achieved by the organization’s meetings held in Abu Dhabi during the period from May 27 to June 5, 2025.

This decision comes based on the working paper presented by the National Guard Command, represented by the National Center for Research and Rescue, during the ICRC meetings, in which representatives of 45 countries participated, along with a number of international organizations, most notably the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The UAE proposed a leading technical proposal aimed at integrating artificial intelligence techniques into the operations of the mission control center (MCC), in order to enhance the efficiency of space rescue systems, and improves the speed and accuracy of response to distress calls, through smart processing of data and their integration on satellite networks.

The Emirati initiative received a wide acclaim from member states, because of its innovation and future orientation that reflects the state’s readiness and leadership in supporting international efforts to modernize the technical structure of the Cospas -Sarsat system.

In light of this, a recommendation was approved by the formation of a joint work team headed by the UAE, to coordinate technical cooperation between the member states and the relevant authorities, and to develop artificial intelligence tools related to the mission control centers, in order to enhance the readiness and response of research and rescue systems globally.

The committee praised the role of the UAE and its qualitative contribution and pre -emptive initiatives in employing modern technologies to serve the goals of international humanitarian rescue.

This decision comes as an embodiment of the advanced international standing that the UAE has, and to consolidate its role as an active strategic partner in the future of the Cospas -Sarsat system and the development of its technical structure.

The new committee is scheduled to undertake the task of setting global standards and rules to integrate artificial intelligence within the satellite search and rescue systems, in addition to enhancing technical cooperation and exchanging experiences and knowledge between member states, and opening the door for membership before the bodies wishing to join this leading international technical initiative.
