The Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Sudan, “Ramtane Lamamra,” stressed that the absence of a peaceful solution to the war in Sudan will have serious repercussions for the country and the entire region, and expressed his hope that the year 2025 will bring peace to the Sudanese people.< /span>
According to the United Nations Information Center, “Lamamra” said: He cannot surrender to the idea that the second anniversary of the outbreak of the conflict will fall next April without all concerned – including all influential global and regional actors – exerting exceptional collective pressure on the belligerents and their supporters to give a real chance for peace..< /span>
Ramatan Lamamra said: I have already visited Port Sudan, and I had the opportunity to meet Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council in Sudan and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces. We had substantive discussions on the current state of the war and exchanged views on how to move towards peace.
In addition, I held several meetings with senior Sudanese officials in Port Sudan with whom I discussed the prospects for UN-led peacemaking efforts. I also met in Addis Ababa "Ethiopia" A delegation assigned by the Rapid Support Forces leadership to discuss the ongoing mediation efforts.
< p dir="RTL"The UN official stressed the need to direct such pressure to “foreign parties that provide weapons and equipment that feed military illusions and misjudgments on the part of the parties, at the expense of the wisdom and value of a peaceful solution that preserves unity and territorial integrity as well as the well-being of Sudan and its people” ;.
The UN official stressed the strong will of the United Nations, which urged it to spare no effort in helping the Sudanese people to end their suffering and achieve stability, security, democratic governance, and development.
He said: We will continue to work and persevere with the aim of creating a conducive environment for an appropriate form of interactions that can bring the parties closer to a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict.
He said, “Ramtan Lamamra.” Last month, my office launched a series of consultations via virtual meetings with a wide range of Sudanese civilians, from across the country, focusing on how to operationalize the recommendations of the Secretary-General – as endorsed by the Security Council – on the protection of civilians, and how to move forward with the implementation of the Jeddah Declaration. Dedicated sessions have already been held with young people and also with women. These consultations will continue during the coming weeks..
He pointed out that the results of these consultations and the opinions of those most affected by the situation in Sudan, namely civilians, will constitute an important tool while engaging with all concerned parties over the coming weeks and months. He stressed that ending the unbearable suffering of civilians in Sudan remains an urgent priority, while in parallel we seek to stop the war and launch a credible political process in a way that does not exclude anyone.< /span>
Ramatane Lamamra stressed that there is a need for a ceasefire that will end the bloodshed and pave the way for a negotiated agreement and a credible political process led by the Sudanese that does not exclude anyone in a way that preserves the unity of Sudan. Otherwise, the repercussions of this long war will be dangerous for Sudan and for the entire region. I sincerely hope we can avoid this danger. I hope that the year 2025 will bring peace to the people of Sudan and the region.
And “Lamamra” explained: Coordination with all parties that share the goal of ending the crisis in Sudan is essential. Part of my role over the past months, in line with my mandate as affirmed by Security Council Resolution 2724 (2024), is to use “my good offices with neighboring parties and States, to complement and coordinate regional peace efforts.”< /span>
