“Atomic Energy” calls on Trump and Iran to negotiate the nuclear issue
Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, stressed that dialogue is “absolutely necessary” to advance negotiations on the Iranian nuclear file.
Grossi told reporters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland: “In the absence of this dialogue, there will be no progress.”
Progress of Iran’s nuclear program
He added that the statements of President Donald Trump, who took office on Monday, and members of the new US administration show that “there is a willingness” to hold “discussions and perhaps move towards an agreement,” noting that Iranian officials also realize the need for dialogue.
Grossi added that the Iranian nuclear program has “developed a lot” in terms of capabilities, locations, and fuel stocks since the end of Trump’s first term in 2021.
During this term, which began in 2017, Trump exerted “maximum pressure” on Iran and the United States withdrew from the Iranian nuclear agreement.
The agreement concluded in 2015 aims to limit Tehran’s nuclear program while allowing the economic sanctions affecting the country to be gradually lifted.

But after Washington’s unilateral withdrawal in 2018, Iran began to back away from its commitments. All attempts to revive the agreement have failed in recent years.
Uranium manufacturing
Tehran announced in early December that it would begin installing new centrifuges at the Fordow site, one of the largest sites in the country in central Iran, “with the aim of significantly increasing the pace of manufacturing uranium enriched by up to 60%,” according to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Production will increase sevenfold, reaching more than 34 kilograms of enriched uranium per month, according to the agency. “That means accelerating the pace,” Grossi said.
Iran insists on its right to produce nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and denies any desire to become a nuclear power.
Since the new reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian took office in August, Tehran has expressed its desire to move negotiations forward to put the agreement back on track.
