In an opinion poll … a sweeping majority of Greenland’s residents refusing to join America

A poll published by a Danish newspaper on Wednesday showed that the vast majority of Greenland’s residents do not want to be part of the United States, after US President Donald Trump expressed his ambitions to include the large polar island.
About 85% of Greenland’s population answered “No” to a question about their support for separation from the Kingdom of Denmark, which also includes the Faro Islands, to become part of the United States, during a poll conducted by Ferian for the daily Berlinski newspaper and the Sermesiak newspaper in Greenland.

Only 6% of those surveyed supported the idea of joining the United States, while 9% have not yet decided.

They do not want to be Americans

“This is the first poll to be able to raise the issue on a representative sample of the Greenland residents, and I think it is very important,” said a professor of political science at the University of Copenhagen Casper Muller Hansen.

He added: “They do not want to be Americans, and I think the survey shows this clearly.”

Anxiety in Denmark is increasing about the ambitions of the US President who repeated on Saturday that the United States will get Greenland, and that Copenhagen will eventually surrender.

Respecting the lands and sovereignty of countries

In response on Tuesday, Danish Prime Minister Metty Friedriksen said after a visit to Paris, where French President Emmanuel Macron met: “We have to respect the lands and sovereignty of countries absolutely, it is an essential element in the international community.”

Greenland seeks to obtain sovereignty, and the issue of independence will be at the heart of the upcoming local election campaign to take place no later than April 6.

In this context, 45% of the population of Greenland, which were included in the poll, saw that Donald Trump’s interest in their country was a threat, while 43% saw that it was an opportunity, while 13% did not show any opinion.
