During the distribution of food supplies… 13 people were killed in a stampede in Nigeria

At least 13 people were killed, including four children, in two separate stampedes in Nigeria during two Christmas food distribution events, police said on Saturday.
The two incidents occurred days after another stampede, in Africa’s largest country in terms of population, while local institutions and individuals are increasingly organizing charitable events before Christmas, amid the country’s worst high-cost crisis in a generation.
Police spokeswoman Josephine Adeh said in a statement that the first stampede that occurred early Saturday morning in Maitama killed 10 people, an upscale area of Abuja, where more than a thousand people were evacuated.

Three people were killed in a similar stampede later in the town of Okija, Anambra State, southeast of the country, at an event for a charitable organization organized by a philanthropist, according to the state police.
Police spokesman Toshukwu Ikenga said: “The event had not yet begun when the stampede started,” and explained that new deaths may be recorded while police investigate the incident.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu expressed his sympathy to the families of the victims and asked the state and relevant authorities to implement strict crowd control measures.
