Implementing the first mandatory stage of standardization of charging ports for mobile phones

The Communications, Space and Technology Commission and the Standards, Metrology and Quality Authority announced the start of implementation of the first mandatory phase. To unify mobile phones and electronic devices in the Saudi market, to be of the “USB Type-C” type, starting from today, January 1, 2025 AD.
The two bodies explained that the decision to unify the types of charging ports; It aims to improve the experience of users in the Kingdom and not burden them with additional costs, provide high-quality charging and data transfer technology, and raise the quality of technical products.

Unifying phone charging ports

The objectives of the decision include: supporting the principles of environmental sustainability, and contributing to achieving sustainable development goals by reducing the volume of electronic waste.
The two bodies revealed that the first mandatory phase includes mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, e-readers, portable video game devices, headphones, earphones, amplifiers, keyboards, and computer pointer devices (mouses), in addition to portable navigation systems. , portable speakers, and wireless routers.
The second phase will start on April 1, 2026, and includes laptop computers.
It is noteworthy that the Communications, Space and Technology Commission and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization announced on 08/06/2023 AD the mandatory stages of unifying charging ports for mobile phones and electronic devices in the Saudi market, and obliging companies and suppliers to standardize the types of charging ports to be of the “USB Type-C” type. This is in accordance with the technical and administrative requirements stipulated in the relevant technical regulations and standard specifications.
