The suspicious message
The police said that the mail room at the consulate was closed and experts from the Forensic Institute of the Berlin State Criminal Investigation Office examined the letter.
The suspicious message was reported to the police at approximately 1155 am local time (1055 GMT).
Police ordered employees to evacuate the mailroom and cordon off the part of the building where it was located. Police said that work at the consulate continued as usual.
The American Embassy in Germany is located in central Berlin, next to its most famous landmark, the famous Brandenburg Gate, but the Consular Services Department is located in an annex in the southwestern Dahlem neighborhood.
