Expectations of an increase in electric car sales in Germany during 2025

The German Automobile Club expects that licenses for new electric cars will increase during the current year.
This is due to increased pressure on manufacturers due to reduced limits on carbon dioxide emissions.

Electric car sales in Germany

The club explained that car buyers can benefit from this by obtaining greater discounts. The boom in electric car sales in Germany came to an abrupt halt last year.
Data from the Federal Motor Vehicles Office reported that the number of purely electric passenger cars that were licensed for the first time last year amounted to 380,600 cars, which represents a decrease of more than 25% compared to their number in 2023.
The proportion of electric cars compared to total new registrations decreased by about five percentage points to reach 13.5%.

Increasing the attractiveness of electric mobility

The German Automobile Club stressed that offering cheaper models and providing reasonable and transparent charging prices are crucial to increasing the attractiveness of electric mobility.

The club praised the announcement by some manufacturers of the launch of new basic models at prices below 25,000 euros this year, while Stefan Gervins, head of the club’s transport department, said: “Model offers are growing, and the development of charging infrastructure is progressing.”
He pointed out that the number of charging points increased by more than 20% during 2024, while fast charging points witnessed an increase of about 40%.
He continued: “However, we still notice significant differences and lack of clarity in prices.”

The impact of the outcome of the parliamentary elections

The club believes that the result of the parliamentary elections scheduled for the end of next February will also be a decisive factor.
“A credible political framework is indispensable for promoting electric mobility,” Gervins said.
He went on to say that private buyers are postponing purchasing decisions or turning to internal combustion engine vehicles due to ongoing uncertainty.
Sales of electric cars in Germany recorded a significant decline during the past year 2024, according to the Federal Motor Vehicles Office.
