Thousands of people demonstrated in Washington on Saturday against the policies of US President-elect Donald Trump, two days before the billionaire returns to the White House.
The protest demonstration, called the “People’s March,” was organized by several groups active in the field of civil rights and social justice, including the team behind the “Women’s Marches” that swept the country on January 21, 2017 after the inauguration of Donald Trump for the first time.

On Saturday, the demonstrators carried colorful banners, and participants in the march that was held in the center of the American federal capital wore small pink hats with ears similar to cat ears, or what are known as “cat hats.”
“These laws are putting our lives in danger,” said Aisha Baker Burrows, a feminist activist who was in the crowd. “Women are dying. Your sisters, your daughters, your mothers, your friends are dying.”

The return of Donald Trump
Under light rain, Suzanne Dutoiles, who came from Florida (southeast) with her daughter to participate in the demonstration, said that she was “scared” and “angry” about the return of Donald Trump.
The 60-year-old added: “A lot of people vote against their own interests. I don’t understand it.”

Immigrant rights
“I try to remain optimistic,” said Karen, a 40-year-old protester who did not want to give her last name. “It is so wonderful to be surrounded by so many people.”

She explained that she came from Arizona (southwest), and it was her first time demonstrating in Washington, stressing that she would continue “the struggle in her homeland.”

Participants in the march are demonstrating for a series of issues they say are threatened by Donald Trump, including combating climate warming and defending the rights of immigrants.
Other similar protests are scheduled to be held across the country, including New York.

After his victory on November 5 over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, Donald Trump will be officially inaugurated in the Capitol building at noon on Monday, and will become the forty-seventh president of the United States.
Trump is expected to arrive in Washington on Saturday evening to attend a reception at one of his golf courses and a fireworks display.
