The United Nations calls for the suspension of violence in Myanmar and ensuring the arrival of humanitarian aid

In a press release issued by the United Nations spokesman, Secretary -General Antonio Guterres condemned all forms of violence in Myanmar, and all parties to the conflict called for the utmost restraint, respect for human rights and international humanitarian law, and to prevent further incitement to violence and sectarian tensions.

Guterres expressed concern about the army’s announcement of its intention to hold elections in light of the escalation of fighting, including air strikes and widespread human rights violations, and without creating conditions that allow the people of Myanmar to exercise their political rights freely and safely.

The statement pointed out that more than 19.9 million people in Myanmar – more than a third of the population – need humanitarian aid, compared to only one million people before the army seized power four years ago. He stressed the need to ensure unrestricted access to humanitarian organizations, allowing the United Nations and its partners to continue to provide basic assistance and services.

The Secretary -General reiterated his call to enhance cooperation between all actors to end hostilities, and to help the Myanmar people progress towards a comprehensive democratic transition and return to civil rule. He also urged the countries of the region to provide protection and safety for the displaced people fleeing conflict and persecution, calling on the international community to increase support for countries hosting refugees from Myanmar, including Bangladesh.

The UN spokesman, Stephen Dujarric, stated that the special envoy of the Secretary -General, Julie Bishop, continues to engage with all the parties concerned, in close coordination with the Association of Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN), in order to reach a solid -led solution to the crisis.

The Secretary -General stressed that any sustainable future for Myanmar must guarantee security, accountability and opportunities for all its societies, including the Rohingya minority, and to address the root causes of conflict, discrimination and marginalization in all its forms. The United Nations was renewed to support the people of Myanmar in these efforts.
