Canada threatens an “immediate response” to American customs duties

On Friday, outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau threatened to take a “strong and immediate response” if the United States went ahead with 25% customs duties on Canadian goods, which are scheduled to enter into force on Saturday.
“No one wants – on both sides of the border – to see American customs duties imposed on Canadian goods,” Trudeau said in a post on the social media platform X today.

Trudeau added: “I have met the Canadian American Relations Council, and we are working hard to prevent these customs duties, but if the United States goes forward, Canada is ready with a strong and immediate response,” Trudeau added.
Caroline Levit, the White House press secretary, confirmed on Friday that 25% fees on the goods from Canada and Mexico will enter into force on Saturday, in addition to customs duties by 10% on Chinese products.
