Trump announces air strikes on a large number of ISIS fighters in Somalia

US President Donald Trump announced that the United States launched “air strikes” on a large number of ISIS fighters in Somalia.
Trump said on his platform “Truth Suosal” that these strikes targeted a leader in the organization in charge of planning attacks, in addition to “other terrorists who recruited them and led them in Somalia.”

He added that the strikes resulted in “the destruction of the caves in which they lived and the killing of a large number of terrorists without prejudice to civilians”, and Trump did not mention the name of the targeted leader or confirmed his death.
“According to our initial evaluation, a number of elements were killed” in the strikes on the Ghulis Mountains in northern Somalia.
The minister added that “this measure would reduce more than ISIS’s ability to plan and carry out terrorist attacks that threaten American citizens.”

ISIS in Somalia

In early January, the United States witnessed an attack that killed 14 people in New Orleans, who suspects the attack on civilian crowds with a rented vehicle, a former American military who appears to be affected by ISIS.
The presence of ISIS is relatively limited in Somalia compared to the extremist youth movement linked to al -Qaeda, but the United Nations warned this year against the increasing activity of Islamic State groups in the country.
The most prominent face of the organization in Somalia is Abdelkader Moamen, while Tori Haming of the International Center for the Study of Extremism, in early January, confirmed that Moamen “is the most important and most powerful person. He is the one who controls the international network of ISIS.”
