Derma Roller…a cosmetic tool that is invading your hair care routine

But to what extent can this technique actually be effective in treating hair loss?
What is derma roller?
It is a small instrument equipped with a metal roller covered with dozens of fine needles made of titanium or stainless steel. The length of the needles ranges between 0.2 and 1.5 mm.
It works by creating superficial pricks in the scalp to stimulate blood circulation and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which are the two proteins responsible for hair strength.
Dr. Christina Collins explained to NBC News that microneedling creates an ideal environment for better absorption of topical treatments such as Minoxidil, which helps new, healthier hair grow.
Adjunctive treatment is not an alternative
Several studies have proven that microneedling improves hair growth, but it works best when used alongside traditional treatments.
In a study published in 2021, it was found that combining Minoxidil with Derma Roller gave better results than either treatment alone.
A scientific review in 2024 that included 696 patients with androgenetic alopecia confirmed a significant improvement in hair density after using Derma Roller regularly for a period ranging between two and six months.
Correct method of use
– It is preferable to choose short needles (0.25–1.5 mm) for home use.
– The tool must be sterilized with alcohol before use.
– Gently pass the device over the scalp in different directions, avoiding strong pressure.
– After the session, it is recommended to apply a serum or natural oil such as rosemary or lavender.
Its use should be avoided in cases of psoriasis, eczema, active wounds or infections on the scalp, as well as for those taking blood-thinning medications.
Derma Roller is not a miracle cure, but it is an effective and helpful tool that can make a real difference in improving hair growth when used correctly and under the supervision of a specialist.
