In pictures: 45 thousand people march for climate in The Hague


Tens of thousands of people demonstrated for rose to the top of the political agenda days before an election dominated by immigration and housing issues.

The demonstrators gathered in a public park before setting off on a march through the city, carrying signs reading "The planet deserves your vote" and"Vote green" and"Return the earth’s coolness"The organizers said that about 45,000 people participated in the march.

Climate Demonstrations

Dan Ziern, who runs a youth movement to combat climate change (23 years old), said: "I think there is great concern about climate policy in the Netherlands. But I don’t think it’s clearly reflected in political discussions and what we’re seeing in these elections"

He added: "It can be seen that the parties do not talk about the matter at all, even those that used to talk about it a lot in the past"

The latest opinion poll conducted by the Evandag Foundation reported that the climate was ranked very low on the list of voters’ priorities before the elections scheduled for October 29.

Climate issues

Climate came in 11th place out of 12 priority issues in the poll conducted last month, which included 25,000 voters. They were presented with 25 topics and asked to choose the five most important to them.

Only 19 percent of respondents chose climate as among their five most important issues. Housing (58 percent), immigration (44 percent) and health care (40 percent) were the top three issues.

Ziern said. "We hope that all parties realize that they can no longer circumvent the climate issue"

Climate Change

Volunteer worker Marijne Roorda came dressed as a polar bear to highlight the plight of these animals as a result of climate change, and expressed his frustration at the absence of the issue of climate change from the election campaign.

The 47-year-old said: "Many parties do not care about the environment. There are even parties that deny that it happened" Climate change.

He added "I think a lot of people are concerned about the climate, especially young people, but a lot of people are tired of politics".
