The Kremlin: The calls for Witkov’s dismissal aim to obstruct the peace settlement in Ukraine

Russian presidential (Kremlin) spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that calls within the United States to dismiss US presidential envoy Steve Witkov, following the publication of alleged texts of his conversations with Russian Presidential Assistant Yuri Ushakov, are an attempt to obstruct the fragile progress towards a peace settlement in Ukraine.
Peskov, referring to the texts of the conversations attributed to Witkov and Ushakov that are available to the public, said: "First, there is nothing particularly worrying about this. Whether we ignore the validity of this matter or not.”
The Kremlin spokesman noted that “President Trump himself – by the way – spoke indirectly in defense of Witkov, as this is the usual job of a negotiator,” according to the Russian TASS news agency.
Peskov indicated that the motivation behind Witkov’s dismissal was most likely a desire to derail the modest momentum towards resolving the conflict through diplomatic means.
He added: “Most likely, the calls for Witkoff’s dismissal are primarily aimed at sabotaging ongoing efforts to reach a peaceful solution,” and “Of course, many will not hesitate to try to obstruct this process.”
