Two Venezuelan opposition members close to Machado were released

On Sunday, Venezuelan authorities released prominent opposition figure Juan Pablo Guanipa, who is close to opposition leader Maria Corina Machado and her legal advisor, Perkins Rocha, ahead of the expected adoption of a historic general amnesty law on Tuesday.
From his exile in Spain, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who was the opposition candidate for the 2024 presidential elections, called for the immediate release of all political prisoners after the release of the two opponents.
Guaniba (61 years old) wrote on the X platform: "We emerge free after a year and a half, in hiding for 10 months, and detained here for about 9 months in Caracas.
He continued: "There is a lot to be said about the present Venezuela and its future, always putting the truth first"
His son Ramon had previously announced his father’s release, and wrote on Ex: "After more than 8 months of unjust imprisonment and more than a year and a half of separation, our entire family will soon be able to be together again."
Disappearance for an entire year
Waniba remained hidden for months.
His last public appearance dates back to January 9, 2025, when he accompanied Machado in a demonstration against Maduro’s appointment as president for a third consecutive term.
The authorities arrested him in May 2025 on charges of electoral conspiracy, and then he was charged with terrorism, money laundering, and incitement to violence and hatred.
He wrote on X: "These releases are not synonymous with complete and complete freedom. As long as legal prosecutions are open, and as long as restrictive measures, threats or censorship remain, persecution will continue."
Machado’s legal advisor
The authorities also released another opposition figure, Perkins Rocha, Machado’s legal advisor.
His wife, Maria Constanza Cipriani, reported on the Controversial Maduro on July 28, 2024.
On January 8, the interim Venezuelan government, under pressure from the United States, promised to carry out the release of a large number of prisoners.
The organization reported "Foro pinal" Non-governmental organizations released at least 18 people on Sunday. According to the organization, about 400 people detained for political reasons have been released since January 8.
