The United Nations stated that the selection process began in November 2025 by inviting member states to submit nominations by April 1, 2026, with the candidates being subjected to informal dialogue sessions in the General Assembly on April 21 and 22, 2026, before the Security Council held closed sessions in late July 2026 to discuss and evaluate the candidates, in preparation for the appointment to be officially approved by the General Assembly later in the same year.
The Secretary-General is appointed by the Assembly. General, which includes 193 member states, based on the recommendation of the Security Council, in accordance with Article 97 of the Charter of the United Nations, while the candidate needs the support of the majority within the Council, without the use of the right of veto against him by any of the five permanent member states.
The United Nations added that the working mechanism requires that the candidate be nominated by at least one of the member states, and that each state has the right to nominate one candidate individually or jointly, without allowing self-nomination, with the possibility of submitting additional nominations after the expiry of the deadline. Security Council
The United Nations indicated that among the informal rules of the process is that the names of citizens of the five permanent members of the Security Council are not put forward to fill the position, which are China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and that there is no official policy for regional rotation in choosing the Secretary-General.
