Half of the new cars registered in South Korea during the first half are environmentally friendly

SEOUL, July 12, 2017 (WAM) – An automobile market observatory reported on Sunday that environmentally friendly cars accounted for half of new car registrations in South Korea during the first half of this year, driven by a sharp increase in electric car sales.
This is the first time that environmentally friendly cars make up more than half of the new cars registered during the period from January to June, according to the data research center “CarIsYou”, which was based on government data.
The data showed that registrations of environmentally friendly cars, including battery-powered electric cars, gasoline-powered hybrid cars, and hydrogen fuel cell cars, in the first six months of the year amounted to 429,163 units, which represents 50.4% of the total newly registered cars of 851,833 cars.
The share of environmentally friendly cars rose steadily, from 9.1% in 2020 to 25.5% in 2023 and 38.5% in 2025, while the share of gasoline-powered vehicles decreased to 39% in the first half of the year, falling below 40% for the first time since 2016, when the percentage reached 39.9%.
Strong sales of electric vehicles were the main driver of the overall increase in green vehicle registrations.
Electric vehicle registrations increased by 112.6% compared to the previous year, reaching 198,969 units in the first half, making electric cars the only major category in terms of mobility and propulsion systems that recorded year-on-year growth.
An official in the sector said that the expanded lineup of new models, and the early disbursement of government subsidies allocated to electric cars, helped environmentally friendly cars become dominant in the local car market.
