South Korea.. President Yoon’s travel ban due to martial law decree

The head of South Korea’s corruption investigation agency said on Monday that he had issued a travel ban on the country’s president, Yeon Suk-yeol, due to a martial law decree.

Opposition proposal for impeachment

The main opposition Democratic Party and five other opposition parties earlier put forward a proposal to impeach the president, claiming that Yoon’s declaration of martial law constitutes a violation of the constitution.
The proposal requires the approval of two-thirds of the members of the National Assembly.
Out of 300 members of the National Assembly, the opposition will need eight votes from the ruling People Power Party to pass the proposal.
Among the ruling party’s deputies, Representative Jo Kyung-tae, a six-term member of the party’s parliament, publicly expressed his support for Yoon’s impeachment, and he is the first ruling party lawmaker to express this position, according to Yonhap.

A call to stop the president’s duties

Ruling party leader Han Dong-hoon also called on Friday for Yoon’s presidential duties to be immediately suspended, a move widely seen as support for the proposal and a clear retreat from his previous position.

If the motion passes, the Constitutional Court will decide whether to reinstate Yoon or remove him from office.
If the court upholds the impeachment proposal, he will be the second president to be impeached since former President Park Geun-hye in 2017.
