“Darkness” .. What is the story of the large power outage in Spain and Portugal?

The electrical current was widely cut in Spain and Portugal, which led to the failure of mobile and internet networks and the stopping of trains, officials announced.
The Spanish government is making unremitting efforts to determine the source of the major power outage, as Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez went to the headquarters of the General Electricity Company to receive briefing.

Sudden electricity

Sanchez called on his government to an emergency meeting to discuss the sudden interruption, according to his office via the Telegram application.
For its part, the Spanish Electricity Company estimated that the restoration would take between six and ten hours.
“We can talk about a delay between 6 and 10 hours if things go well. Some supply points have already been fixed,” Eduardo Breito’s operations manager told Kadina Sir.

Pictures published on social media showed the metro stations mired in the dark, with the stops of trains, and people in offices and corridors using their phones to see.
The National Roads Authority asked drivers to stop walking with traffic lights, which forced vehicles to slow down to avoid collisions, and pushing the police to intensify traffic directive at the intersections.
People were seen going out to the streets, raising their phones in an attempt to connect to the Internet, and Spanish media reported that people were also trapped in elevators.

The country’s digital infrastructure is disrupted

In addition, the “Nablix” website to monitor Internet activity stated that the internet interruption has caused “a large part of the country’s digital infrastructure,” noting that Internet communications decreased to only 17% of normal use.
In the neighboring Portugal, the Electricity Company said that the entire Iberian Peninsula was affected by the interruption of electricity, adding that the interruption occurred by midday.
Electricity was also interrupted for a short period in southwestern France, according to the local electricity operating company, confirming the return of the current.
The company said that “an electrical accident currently affects Spain and Portugal, and the cause is still not specified.”

The airport operating company “Inna” confirmed that there are delays in flights, but the country’s airports are still operating thanks to “emergency electricity systems.”

We continue to work to restore electricity.

The Spanish company Red Electric announced that it had succeeded in starting to restore electricity in the north and south of the country, but the problem has not yet been solved.
“We continue to work to restore electricity,” she said.
The Spanish newspaper “El Pais” published pictures on its website for the parked metro trains in Madrid, and the police organizing traffic, and for its journalists working in a dark office on revealing light.
She also indicated that the basic departments in hospitals were able to continue working thanks to the reserve generators, while some other units remained without electricity
