The Kremlin announced that Russia granted political asylum to former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally made the decision to grant asylum to Assad.
Peskov did not comment on the specific location of Assad, and said that Putin does not plan to meet the former Syrian president.

This Monday afternoon, the UN Security Council will hold an emergency closed session of discussions on Syria after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad, according to what identical diplomatic sources reported to Agence France-Presse.

Russia’s Assistant Representative to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyansky, said via Telegram: “In connection with the recent events in Syria, whose repercussions on this country and the entire region were not assessed, Russia requested closed emergency consultations in the UN Security Council.”
