Charles III is the focus of a documentary that recounts notable moments during his coronation
Made of solid gold and set with semi-precious stones, this tiara is the centerpiece of the British Royal Crown Jewels. It was made in the 17th century and is only used in coronation ceremonies.
The crown was last worn in 1953 by Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September 2022.
Before the coronation
In a documentary that will be broadcast during Christmas leave in Canada, Charles III, 76 years old, describes this crown as heavy and long, explaining that he practiced how to place it before the coronation.
“I was a little worried it might shake,” the king says, as he has to “look straight ahead” when positioned, according to Coronation Girls, a documentary about Canadian women invited to attend the coronation of Elizabeth II.
The king explains that he remembers this event “well,” even though he was only 4 years old at the time.
“My grandmother explained things to me,” he says.
Coronation ceremony
Charles recalls his mother practicing before the ceremony to place the crown. He says, “My mother used to come when I was bathing and she was wearing the crown.”
The documentary will air December 26 on WNED PBS in Canada, and then next year in other countries.
