Two dead and three missing in a fire at a fuel depot in central Italy
Two people were killed, 3 others were missing, and 26 people were injured in a fire that broke out on Monday at an Eni fuel depot in Calenzano, in the Tuscany region of central Italy.
The authorities imposed a cordon around the fire site with a radius of 5 kilometers, and called on residents to remain in their homes so as not to be exposed to toxic fumes.
The governor of the Tuscany region, Eugenio Gianni, had previously indicated on Telegram that the fire was caused by an “explosion.”
Nabiran threatens fuel tanks
According to a statement by Eni, the fire was limited to the loading area of the site linked to the Livorno refinery, without threatening the entire storage area.
Videos posted on social media showed flames several meters high and a huge column of black smoke rising from the site, not far from the fuel tanks.
Civil Protection asked residents of the area to close their doors and windows.
Investigations to determine the causes of the fire
Investigations are being conducted to determine the causes of the fire and its environmental and health consequences.
Experts were sent to the site to assess the risks of contamination, including to nearby waterways.
The government said in a statement that Prime Minister Georgia Meloni offered her condolences to the families of the victims.
