America begins transferring thousands of soldiers from a Japanese island.. What is the story?

The United States of America has begun transferring thousands of Marines from the Japanese island of Okinawa to other locations, according to what Tokyo and Washington announced.
This comes after decades of complaints from local residents on the island about this American military presence.
The Japanese Ministry of Defense and the Marine Corps said that the transfer process began with “a small group of about 100 Marines for logistical support who were transported to the territory of the US island of Guam.”

The joint statement continued that the transfer to Guam constitutes “the first stage of transferring Marines to locations outside Japan.”
The United States announced in 2012 that it would redeploy nine thousand Marines stationed on the island, as communities consider that American bases pose a burden due to pollution, noise, and helicopter crashes.
