A major rescue operation begins in Italy to free an expert trapped in a cave

A major rescue operation began today, Monday, northeast of the Italian city of Bergamo, to free a woman considered an expert in cave exploration, who was trapped while exploring a cave with eight others.
Ottavia Piana was trapped deep inside the Bueno Fonteno cave, where temperatures ranged between 7 and 8 degrees Celsius (44 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit), in light of high humidity.

Expedition

Bayana was injured after falling from a height of about 5 meters (16 feet) last Saturday evening, during an expedition to map a distance of one kilometer (half a mile) of an unexplored branch of the cave, but rescuers said that she was alert and responsive.
Rescuers reached it late on Sunday evening, and used small explosives to try to penetrate the last 100 meters (yards) in order to reach it.
A spokesman for the rescue operation, Mauro Goducci, said that it was impossible to predict how long the process of freeing Piana might take.
