110,000 homes were destroyed. The death toll from Cyclone “Chido” in Mozambique rises

The authorities in Mozambique announced that the death toll from Cyclone Chido had risen to at least 94 people on Sunday.
The National Institute for Risk and Disaster Management in the southern African country said that the hurricane, which caused widespread destruction in Mayotte, the small French archipelago located in the Indian Ocean, destroyed nearly 110,000 homes in Mozambique, leaving, in addition to its victims, more than 620,000 affected.
Strong winds accompanying this massive hurricane reached speeds of “about 260 kilometers per hour” and rains of “250 mm in 24 hours” swept the province of Cabo Delgado (north), where more than 500,000 affected people were counted.

Pictures from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in the Misovi region most affected by the cyclone, which left 670 injured, showed scenes of devastation with shattered homes and others whose roofs were ripped off.
Mozambique, a Portuguese-speaking country that regularly suffers from natural disasters, is one of the poorest countries in the world, and last year witnessed the worst drought in southern Africa in a century, according to the World Food Programme.
“Shedo”, which declined in intensity as it reached the African continent, killed 13 people and injured about 30 in Malawi on Monday.
