Snow storms cut off electricity to tens of thousands of homes in Bosnia
A statement by Elektroprivreda BiH, one of three electrical service companies in the country, said that “about 60,000 customers are currently cut off from electricity.”
Power was cut off to about 130,000 homes, institutions, and businesses for hours during the morning, but teams sent to the site were able to carry out repairs, according to the same source.
The company explained that “the network outages were caused by heavy snowfall accompanied by winds.”
50 lines out of service
The Yunasana Canton (northwest) was the most affected, but electricity was also cut off to thousands of homes in the regions of Tuzla in the northeast of the country and Zenica in the center of the country.
At the same time, the company “Electrokrajina”, which supplies electricity to the north of the country, reported that distribution in its region witnessed major disturbances.
Power was partially cut off in several cities, including Prijedor and its surroundings, and many villages, due to about 50 power lines being out of service.
“Our teams are working on the ground to fix the malfunctions,” the company said in a statement.
The storm intensifies
The storm is expected to intensify in the coming days, according to the Meteorological Institute of Republika Srpska, which expected snowfall reaching a height of 100 centimeters in mountainous areas by Tuesday evening.
On Monday afternoon, traffic was disrupted on many roads, especially in the north of the country and in the higher areas in the centre.
Bosnia experienced a particularly dry winter in 2023-2024, as no snow fell, which led to a decline in the levels of lakes and rivers that year.
Heavy rains led to floods in October that killed 27 people, most of them in the Yaglanica region in the southwest of the country.
