To increase demand for electricity… Japan intends to double nuclear energy production
A committee commissioned by the Japanese government on Wednesday largely endorsed the country’s new energy policy for the next few years.
This policy includes enhancing sources to reach half of the country’s electricity needs by 2040, while doubling nuclear energy production, amid increasing demand for energy in the era of artificial intelligence, and at the same time efforts to achieve carbon elimination goals.
The Ministry of Industry submitted a draft plan for final revision by the 16-member committee, most of whom are companies, academics, and civil organizations advocating the use of nuclear energy.

Double nuclear energy
The plan calls for doubling the use of nuclear energy and scrapping the nuclear phase-out policy adopted after the 2011 Fukushima power plant meltdown.
The plan is expected to receive Cabinet approval by March, after consultations, and then replace the current energy policy dating back to 2021.
The new proposal indicates that nuclear energy should provide 20 percent of Japan’s energy supply by 2040, an increase from 8.5 percent the previous year.
