4 dead.. 45 reports show hurricane losses in the southern United States
At least four people were killed due to severe storms that sparked several tornadoes that swept across the southern United States earlier this week, while officials are working to assess the damage.
At least 45 reports of tornado damage have been issued across Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, said Brian Hurley, a meteorologist with the US National Weather Service.
Storms during holiday trips
Storms that occurred during busy holiday flights caused unfavorable road conditions, leading to delays or cancellations at some of the busiest U.S. airports.
As of Sunday afternoon, there were more than 600 flight delays at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, according to FlightAware.com.
5 tornadoes in Houston
“It’s fairly uncommon to have severe weather of this magnitude this late in the year,” National Weather Service meteorologist Frank Pereira said.
In the Houston area, National Weather Service storm survey crews confirmed that at least five tornadoes touched down north and south of the city on Saturday.
