An unprecedented amount of homemade explosives was seized in Virginia
Federal investigators have seized one of the largest stockpiles of homemade explosives ever seized after arresting a Virginia person on firearms charges last month, according to a filing filed by federal prosecutors in court.
Prosecutors filed a memo Monday in court saying investigators seized more than 150 pipe bombs and other homemade devices when they searched Brad Spafford’s northwest Norfolk home in December.
In their memorandum, prosecutors expressed their belief that this operation was “the largest seizure in terms of the number of finished explosive devices in the history of the FBI.”

Prosecutors also added that what appeared to be additional pipe bombs were found in a fully secured backpack in a bedroom of the home where Spafford lives with his wife and two young children.
