Storm “Dekelidi”… floods sweeping Mayotte and three deaths in Madagascar

The French archipelago of Mayotte, located in the Indian Ocean, witnessed flooding due to Tropical Storm Dikelidi, which killed three people in Madagascar, less than a month after Cyclone Chido.
The storm is currently heading towards Mozambique, which was hit hard by Chido in December, leaving at least 120 dead and about 900 injured.
In the north of the island of Madagascar, three people were killed by heavy rains and at least 920 others were affected, according to authorities.
French Foreign Minister Manuel Valls said on Sunday evening that “Mayotte was hit by a strong tropical storm.”
But there are no casualties, according to the governor of Mayotte, François-Xavier Beauville, who decided to keep the alert in the archipelago at the “red alert” level until Monday evening.

“The winds are still very strong and the rain is also very heavy,” he said in a statement to Mayotte 1 TV, expressing his fear of “major floods.”
Meteo France expects the rain and winds to subside during the night, but the rain will return to intensify on Monday morning due to “Kashkasi”, the monsoon phenomenon that usually blows during this period.
The governor of the archipelago considered that “the region was greatly weakened” by Hurricane Shido, which caused the removal of vegetation, damage to infrastructure, and destruction of surfaces and habitats.
Chido caused enormous damage in the poorest French departments. Its passage resulted in the death of at least 39 people, more than 5,600 wounded, and the destruction of many fragile homes.
