The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration meets with the Director-General of the World Trade Organization

In continuation of his extensive meetings with leaders of international organizations in Geneva, Dr. Badr Abdel Ati, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, on Monday, January 27, 2025, with Dr. “Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala” Director General of the World Trade Organization.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs congratulated the Director General on her re-election to the position for a second term, and appreciated the existing cooperation between Egypt and the organization, reiterating the Egyptian government’s full support for the objectives of the organization and the principles of the fair and rule-based multilateral international trading system.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs also stressed Egypt’s interest in trade issues as it is one of the basic pillars of achieving development. He highlighted the great interest that the Egyptian government attaches to advancing the development dimension of the organization’s work by promoting special and differential treatment for developing countries in the organization’s various agreements, and developing technical support and capacity-building programs to support the efforts of developing countries and their effective involvement in international trade and global supply chains. He added that these measures would support the efforts of developing countries to achieve their goals related to industrial development, economic diversification, and enhancing their greater integration into the multilateral trading system.
On the other hand, Dr. noted. Abdel Ati called for the continued Egyptian efforts to calm the situation in the Middle East region to avoid the region sliding into a comprehensive war that hinders the movement of international trade and navigation, pointing to the severe damage that occurred to Egypt as a result of the escalating geopolitical, regional and international tensions that the region has witnessed since the outbreak of the war in Gaza, which led to… Egypt lost approximately 70% of Suez Canal revenues over the past months.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs also renewed Egypt’s keenness to continue… Its active and constructive involvement in the various work mechanisms of the organization with the aim of reaching consensuses on the main topics under discussion, especially with regard to the issue of reforming the dispute settlement system, negotiations to reform the Agriculture Agreement and enhancing food security, as well as enhancing special and differential treatment for developing countries, in preparation for producing tangible outcomes on These topics will be discussed during the organization’s fourteenth Ministerial Conference scheduled to be held in Cameroon in 2026.
