“Economy” launches the “IP Sport” initiative to protect intellectual property in the sports sector

The Ministry of Economy launched the “IP Sport” initiative, in cooperation with the Ministry of Sports under the slogan “in the world of sports, we respect intellectual property rights, as we respect the rules of the game”, with the aim of achieving a sustainable balance between adhering to the rules of fair play, respecting intellectual rights, and protecting sports brands in the state .
The initiative was announced during an event organized by the Ministry in the presence of the partner authorities represented by the Ministry of Sports, the Council of Trademarks, the Emirates Intellectual Property Society, the Emirates Center for Sports and Sports Medicine, Danube Sports World and the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property «UAE), and the Dubai Intellectual Property Working Group, In conjunction with the country’s celebration of the month of innovation under the slogan “Emirates is invented by 2025”.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, stressed that «the UAE has established its leading and global position in developing an integrated protection system for intellectual property rights based on the best practices used globally, by adopting advanced legislation and launching innovative initiatives that support creators and innovators in various sectors, Including the sports sector, which represents one of the basic engines of economic growth in the country, which contributes to the consolidation of its position among the most innovative countries in the world, and in line with the vision of “We Emirates 2031”.
He pointed out that the “IP Sport” initiative, which comes in cooperation with a number of concerned authorities in the state, contributes to achieving integration between intellectual property rights and vital sectors in the state, especially the sports sector, as the initiative works to provide a balanced sports environment that supports innovation and protects the rights of all The parties in the sports sector, and enhances its contribution to the growth and sustainability of the national economy, and also provides the initiative for workers in the sports sector in the country necessary to protect their innovations and creative work from any violation or illegal use.
He pointed out during his speech at the event that the Ministry of Economy issued and made a series of economic policies and legislation that included laws of “industrial property protection”, “trademarks” and “copyright and neighboring rights”.
For his part, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Sports, Ghanem Mubarak Al -Hajri, explained that the “IP Sport” initiative embodies the Ministry’s commitment to spread awareness about the importance of intellectual property in the sports sector, as it reflects our keenness to enhance the basic values adopted by the Ministry of Sports, which is in governance, partnership and achievement to reach sports Emirati to new stages of excellence.
According to the latest results announced by the end of 2024, which indicate the growth of the sector and its contribution to the growth of the state’s non -oil product, the total number of national and international brands registered in the Emirates reached 370 thousand and 600 brands, including 1909 marks registered in the sports sector.
The number of patents registered in the country reached 6162 patents, while the number of intellectual works recorded in the Emirates reached 21,268 works, and the total registered industrial models reached 9503 models.
