World Health: Cholera injuries and deaths rose 50% in 2024

Philip Barbosa, head of the World Health Control Group, said that the number of cholera injuries and deaths due to it increased in the world by about 50% last year compared to 2023.

Barbosa indicated in a press statement in Geneva, that the number of injuries reached at least 810,000 cases, and 5900 deaths were recorded in the disease mentioned in 2024.

“While we will publish more complete statistics later this year, the initial data indicates that the World Health Organization was informed in 2024, about 810,000 injuries and 5900 deaths with cholera, an increase of about 50% compared to 2023.”

He said: “But even these numbers are very high for cholera, a disease that spreads through food or water contaminated with bacteria present in the stool. This disease should not be found in the twenty -first century.”

According to him, since the beginning of 2025, nearly 100,000 cases of cholera and 1300 deaths were reported in 25 countries.

Cholera is known as an infectious disease caused by cholera bacteria. In his most severe condition, it can lead to death within hours if the patient is not treated. The main treatment of cholera includes “compensation for lost fluids and salts, in addition to using antibiotics to reduce the duration of infection and prevent the transmission of the disease.” However, the increased resistance to antibiotics threatens the effectiveness of treatment, which increases the risk of the disease.
