“Central” addresses global technology companies to adopt the new dirham symbol

The central bank addressed the global technology companies to adopt the new code for UAE dirhams, on the keyboards of computers made by those companies, and through international market screens, international financial transactions and search engines.
A source familiar with “Emirates Today”, which preferred not to be named, said that the “Central” communicated with companies such as “Apple”, “Microsoft”, “Google”, and other major international companies, and asked her to replace the current symbol of dirhams, who are currently used in transactions, with the new symbol, with a proposal for amendment, which may be in September 2025.
The source said: «Global technology companies are accustomed to updating such data and symbols annually, so if you cannot make the amendment of the new dirham symbol during the next two months (until September), the date will be in the next year, according to their annual updates.
He added that «the adoption of the new symbol of the dirhams is on a number of stages according to the course in the guideline issued by the central bank a while ago», noting that «the adoption of the new icon of the dirham on the number (6) in the keyboard of computers, a proposal in the guide, but it cannot be said that it is certain until the official amendment is made by international companies. For the dirham, “the currency code is designed to appear on the number (6) button in all kinds of keyboards.”
It is noteworthy that, on May 27, the Central Bank built on all financial institutions operating in the country, starting to use the new symbol of the national currency “dirham” in its monetary and digital form in applications, bills, receipts, price cards, and online shopping, in addition to checks and ATMs, banking electronic applications, as well as online trading platforms, and foreign exchange sites.
