France expands the smoking ban to include beaches, parks and bus stations

The ban on smoking at bus and beaches around France enter into force starting today, Sunday, in light of the country’s efforts to protect against the harmful effects of tobacco smoking.

The new rules include a smoking ban in public parks, areas surrounding schools, open places in sports facilities, and libraries.

Those who smoke in these areas will be fined, as Minister of Health “Catherine Futran” announced a fine of 135 euros (158 dollars) weeks ago, but the amount has not been formally confirmed within the rules.

She said that tobacco is still a serious health threat, as smoking is still the main cause of death in France because it is responsible for 75,000 deaths annually, or more than 200 cases per day.

“Futran” recently announced that the embargo does not include electronic cigarettes, and that smoking will be allowed in the external sitting areas of restaurants and cafes.

The restrictions imposed on smoking are not new in France, as it has long been banned in schools, public transportation, closed public places, offices, and playgrounds.
