The Secretary -General elected to the United Nations Tourism Organization discusses with the Director of the World Trade Organization ways to link tourism to international trade

Geneva, July 13/ WAM/ His Excellency Sheikha Nasser Al -Nuwais, the Secretary -General of the United Nations Tourism Organization for the period from 2026 to 2029, held a meeting with Dr. Nguzi Okunjo Iyalia, General Manager of the World Trade Organization.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to enhance the institutional partnership during the next stage, and to open new paths to integrate tourism and trade within international efforts to enhance the comprehensive development of these two vital sectors.
His Excellency Sheikha Al -Nuwais – who is visiting Switzerland in an official delegation from the state, headed by His Excellency Abdullah bin Touq Al -Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism – confirmed that she puts the alignment of policies and visions aimed at developing and supporting international tourism with the directions of the World Trade Organization within its vision during the next stage, by launching initiatives focusing on stimulating investment in tourism activities, and facilitating trade in tourism services.
She pointed out that benefiting from human capabilities in the tourism and commercial sectors requires international cooperation to develop skills, and to create flexible and comprehensive commercial and investment environments in the tourism sector that keeps pace with global changes, in a way that contributes to enhancing the active participation of women and youth in drawing the features of tourism and commercial policies.
The two sides reviewed the importance of the tourism sector as one of the basic tributaries of international trade, given its broad intertwining with major sectors such as agriculture, food, transportation and financial services, as well as its pivotal role in supporting investment movement and facilitating trade in services and discussing the importance of integrating commercial and tourism policies, in a way that contributes to formulating more comprehensive and fair development models for all member states.
The two parties discussed the available and supportive opportunities to enhance cooperation by launching joint cognitive initiatives, organizing dialogue platforms highlighting the contribution of tourism in international trade, and supporting policies aimed at facilitating the movement of investors and visitors, and enhancing trade efficiency in services related to tourism.
