The death toll from Typhoon Kalmaigi in the Philippines has risen to at least 66 people, civil defense officials announced today.
Rafaelto Alejandro, a civil defense official, said: "Large cities and densely populated urban areas are the most affected" He added that 49 out of 66 casualties were recorded in Cebu Province (central), and entire towns in this region were flooded,
while residents tried to seek refuge on the roofs of houses to escape the muddy waters that swept away cars, trucks, and even huge shipping containers, according to what video clips showed. Cebu Provincial Governor Pamela Baricuatro described the situation as unprecedented, saying the floods were devastating.
