Chinese President: Beijing and Washington must move forward in the right direction
Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday, “China and the United States must maintain the momentum in relations, and continue to move forward in the right direction on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit.”
The Chinese President’s statements came – during a phone call – with US President Donald Trump, according to the “Xinhua” news agency. Xi clarified China’s principled position on the Taiwan issue, stressing that the return of Taiwan to China is an integral part of the post-war international order. In the context of noting that China and the United States fought fascism and militarism side by side, Xi said that under the current circumstances, it is more important for the two sides to jointly protect the victory of World War II.
In turn, Trump said, “President Xi is a great leader, adding that he very much enjoyed meeting with him in Busan, and that he fully agrees with Xi’s comments about the relationship of the two countries,” adding that the two sides are implementing all the provisions of what the two leaders agreed upon in Busan.
Trump pointed out that China played a major role in the victory of World War II, stressing that the United States realizes how important the Taiwan issue is to China.
