Beijing.. Macron discusses with Xi ways to stop the war in Ukraine

The French President arrived Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday to Beijing, where he is expected to put pressure on his Xi Jinping to help reach a ceasefire in Ukraine, in addition to discussing trade relations between their countries.

The French presidency said that Macron would inform Xi that China should "Refuse to provide any means, in any way, for Russia to continue the war".

And then visit

Ceasefire Attempts

Macron, who is on his fourth official visit to China since taking office in 2017, has arrived and will meet President Xi and Premier Li Qiang in the Great Hall of the People in the capital, before heading to Chengdu, where an animal was returned. Two pandas were loaned to France.

The agenda includes efforts to end the war that has been going on for nearly 4 years in Ukraine.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said: "We are counting on China, as a permanent member of the Security Council, to put pressure on Moscow so that Russia, and especially Vladimir Putin, can agree to a ceasefire."

He added: "China can play a decisive role in guiding Russia towards making the right decision"

China’s position on the Ukrainian war

Macron made similar calls during his last trip to China in April 2023, as well as during Xi’s visit to France in May 2024, but to no avail.

China regularly calls for peace talks and respect for the territorial integrity of all countries, but it has never condemned Russia for its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Western governments accuse Beijing of providing Russia with economic support. Vital to its war effort, especially by supplying military components for its defense industry.
