Pillowcase…the small detail that ruins or protects your hair

The pillowcase is one of the most neglected factors that directly affects the health of the hair, as it touches its strands for long hours during sleep. Contrary to what it may seem, the type of fabric used can be a major cause of hair breakage, split ends, and loss of shine over time.

Cotton pillowcases, despite their widespread popularity, are considered the least gentle on the hair, due to their rough texture and high ability to absorb moisture. Repeated friction between the hair and the cotton threads weakens the outer layer of the hair, while the cotton pulls the natural oils from the scalp, making the hair appear dry and tangled upon waking up, especially for those with long, curly, or chemically treated hair.

In contrast, pillowcases made of silk or satin provide a smooth surface that reduces friction and allows the hair to glide smoothly while sleeping, which reduces breakage and tangling and maintains natural moisture and shine. This difference is more evident in dry or curly hair, which needs additional care to avoid damage.

Natural silk is the best option in terms of hair protection, thanks to its protein composition and limited ability to absorb moisture, but it is more expensive and requires special care. As for synthetic satin, although it is less effective than silk, it remains a practical and acceptable option with a lower budget, compared to cotton.

The choice of pillowcase varies according to the type of hair. Curly and dry hair benefits most from silk, while those with oily hair may prefer cotton to absorb excess oils. However, reducing friction remains essential for the health of all hair types.

In conclusion, changing the pillowcase may be a simple step, but it can make a noticeable difference in the softness, strength and shine of the hair. Instead of resorting to expensive treatments, a small investment in a suitable pillowcase can protect hair night after night, and enhance the results of daily care.
