Two companies "K2" and"WeRide" They cooperate to operate self-driving buses in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, 27 JANUARY / WAM / “K2”, a company owned by the Abu Dhabi government and specialized in advanced autonomous systems and technologies supported by artificial intelligence, signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with “WeRide” company to cooperate in the joint operation of self-driving buses in Abu Dhabi, with the support of the Intelligent Autonomous Systems Council and the Integrated Transport Centre.
The memorandum was signed on the sidelines of the UMEX 2026 exhibition and within the framework of supporting the vision of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi aimed at strengthening the smart mobility system by enabling the practical application of self-driving public transportation services, which contributes to consolidating the emirate’s position as a global center for smart and sustainable solutions in the transportation sector.
Walid Al Balushi, Vice President of Strategy at K2, stressed that the strategic cooperation with WeRide reflects the importance of partnerships in achieving a future in which self-driving technologies operate efficiently and sustainably.
He said that “K2” company uses its local expertise and capabilities in fleet management and its experience in implementing mobility solutions on the ground, while “WeRide” contributes with its global experience in the field of autonomous vehicles and its extensive record in operations.
For his part, Ryan Chan, Regional General Manager for the Middle East and Africa at WeRide, said that the memorandum of understanding with “K2” represents a new stage in the company’s growth through the partnership to develop and market its self-driving buses “Robobus” in Abu Dhabi, explaining that the combination of the Level 4 “L4” self-driving technology owned by “WeRide” and the local expertise of “K2” accelerates the deployment of safer, smarter and more sustainable self-driving public transportation solutions in the country and the region.
K2 has a proven track record in operating mobility solutions across the autonomous driving ecosystem. Its subsidiaries have tested automated taxis and delivery solutions over distances exceeding tens of thousands of kilometres.
