The Cybersecurity Council stresses the importance of protecting digital identity to preserve privacy and prevent fraud

Abu Dhabi, April 26 / WAM / The Cyber Security Council of the UAE Government stressed the importance of protecting digital identity, considering that it represents one of the most important assets owned by individuals and institutions alike.

The Council explained that the digital identity contains personal data, financial transactions, and health records, making it an important asset that individuals must ensure adequate protection.

The Council stated, in statements to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, that with the spread of artificial intelligence tools, the Internet of Things, and cloud applications, the digital identity has become an easy target for cyber hackers who exploit any loophole to impersonate, defraud, or sell data on the black market, stressing that protecting this identity is not a technical luxury, but rather a necessity to protect privacy, prevent fraud, and ensure the continuity of digital services without interruption or huge financial losses.

He added that indicators showed a significant increase in cyber attacks on digital identities by 32% during the first half of this year, especially with the expansion of reliance on digital services and smart applications. He stressed, in this context, the importance of adopting advanced solutions such as multi-factor authentication, which has proven its ability to prevent more than 99% of attacks on digital identity, making it one of the most effective tools in protecting users.

The Council warned that the impact of a digital identity breach may not only be limited to data loss, but may also extend to identity theft, fraud, and financial losses, in addition to negative effects on personal and professional reputation, noting that these multiple risks make protecting digital identity a strategic necessity, and not just a technical option.

The Council presented a set of basic measures, most notably not sharing any sensitive personal information, refraining from reusing weak passwords, and choosing strong and complex passwords, in addition to activating multi-factor authentication, stressing that these steps, despite their simplicity, constitute the first line of defense in the face of growing threats.

The Council stressed that the battle to protect digital identity is no longer purely technical, but has become a battle of awareness and behavior. Advanced technologies alone are not enough without a user who is aware of the risks and is able to deal with them intelligently, especially with the continuing digital transformation and the acceleration of innovation. The challenge will remain in achieving a balance between ease of use and security, which requires integration between regulatory policies, modern technologies, and a conscious digital culture capable of protecting individuals and communities at the same time.
