Surveying water channels using “Mobile Mapping” technology

Dubai Municipality completed the first experiment of its kind in the Middle East to survey canals and waterways using the “Mobile Mapping” external surveying technology via the “Leica TRK” device installed on a boat designated for this purpose.

The achievement represents a qualitative addition to Dubai’s geospatial system, which is among the most advanced and efficient in the world, as it contributes to providing accurate and updated spatial data that supports various vital sectors and enhances the efficiency of asset management and sustainable urban planning.

The experience included implementing advanced survey work for the Dubai Water Canal in the Al Jaddaf area, during which detailed, high-resolution data was collected and advanced-quality 3D models were produced in cooperation with specialized partners, opening broader horizons for using this data to improve the efficiency of infrastructure management and developing urban projects in accordance with international best practices.

Engineer Maitha Al Nuaimi, Director of the Geographic Information Systems Center at Dubai Municipality, said: “The initiative comes within Dubai Municipality’s ongoing efforts to enhance the digital infrastructure by developing an integrated geographic database that supports the emirate’s digital twin project and enables government agencies to make accurate and rapid decisions based on reliable data, thus enhancing Dubai’s readiness and leadership as a smart and future city.”

The municipality continues to carry out survey work to include all water channels in the emirate, in coordination with the relevant authorities, in preparation for moving to the operational expansion phase and activating the project’s outputs on a larger scale, in a way that supports the integration of smart systems and improves the efficiency and sustainability of city management.
