The President of South Korea declares martial law… and the army raises its state of alert

South Korean President Yeon Suk-yeol declared martial law in an unannounced live television address on Tuesday.
Yoon did not clarify what measures would be taken, citing a proposal by the opposition Democratic Party, which has a majority in parliament, to remove top prosecutors.

Emergency in South Korea

“To protect liberal South Korea from the threats posed by communist forces in North Korea and eliminate anti-state elements… I declare a state of emergency and martial law,” Yoon said in his speech.
South Korean Defense Minister Kim Young-hyun ordered a meeting of senior commanders and called for increased vigilance, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported, citing the ministry on Tuesday, after Yoon declared martial law.
