12 people died and went missing due to massive floods in Indonesia

Massive floods and the resulting landslides and mudslides in Indonesia caused the death of ten people and the loss of two others on the main island of Java.
The head of rescue operations, Lieutenant Colonel Yudi Haryanto, said: “The heavy rains that have been falling on the country for nearly a week have caused flooding on river banks and led to widespread damage to more than 170 villages in the city of Sukabumi, West Java province.”

Search and rescue work is ongoing

Haryanto added that landslides, floods and strong winds forced more than three thousand people to flee their homes and move to temporary shelters set up by the government. He also pointed out that rescue workers recovered ten bodies today in the villages of Tegalbulod, Sembnan and Shimas, the most affected, including three children, adding that relief workers are still searching for two missing villagers.
In turn, the Indonesian authorities urged nearly a thousand people to evacuate their homes and move to safe areas. It is noteworthy that monsoon rains in the period from October to March usually cause floods and landslides in Indonesia, an archipelago that includes 17,000 islands where millions of people live in mountainous areas or near fertile flood plains.
