"OPEC" Appoints Chairman of the Board of Governors and renews the Secretary-General’s term

Vienna, December 10 / WAM / The 189th “regular” meeting of the Conference of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) today elected its president and alternate president for the year 2025.

The conference appointed Ademola Adeyemi Biro, Governor of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to OPEC, as Chairman of the Board of Governors for the year 2025, and His Excellency Eng. Adeeb Al-Amaa, Governor of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to OPEC, as Alternate Chairman for the same period. He also renewed the term of His Excellency Haitham Al-Ghais as Secretary-General of OPEC for another period of three years, starting from August 1, 2025.

He expressed his great appreciation to the outgoing OPEC Conference President, His Excellency Marcel Abeke, Minister of Petroleum of the Republic of Gabon, for his exemplary leadership in 2024.

The conference decided to hold its next regular meeting on May 28, 2025, and noted that September 2025 will mark the sixty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the organization in Baghdad in 1960 and the sixtieth anniversary of the transfer of the OPEC secretariat to Vienna, Austria. The meeting was held via video communication technology and was chaired by His Excellency Marcel Abeke, Minister of Petroleum of the Republic of Gabon. The conference reviewed the report of the Secretary-General and the report of the Council of the Economic Committee, as well as many items on the agenda. The conference received an update on the 9th OPEC International Symposium, scheduled for July 9-10, 2024 in Vienna, Austria. He pointed out that the symposium has become a global platform to discuss the challenges, as well as the opportunities, facing the oil and energy industries.
