Geneva, December 16 / WAM / The International Labor Organization said that international migrant workers play a crucial role in the global economy and a vital force in the global labor market, as they constituted 4.7% of the total global labor force in 2022, and most of them work in high-income countries and in key sectors such as Services, especially caregiving.

In its latest report on the world’s labor force, issued today in Geneva, the organization stated that its estimates regarding international migrant workers indicate that 167.7 million migrants were part of the labor force in destination countries in 2022, and of these, 102.7 million were men and 64.9 million women, which is This represents an increase of more than 30 million since 2013, an increase that was mainly observed between 2013 and 2019.

According to the report, the majority of immigrants are concentrated in the labor force in high-income countries, which constituted 68.4% of the total (114.7 million people), followed by 17.4% (29.2 million) in middle-income countries.

The report indicated that the majority of immigrants in the labor force are concentrated in northern, southern, and western Europe, North America, and the Arab countries, and that the share of immigrants in the labor force living in northern, southern, and western Europe rose from 22.5% in 2013 to 23.3% in 2022. In contrast, the share Immigrants in the labor force in North America and Arab countries have slight declines.

Gilbert Hongbo, Director-General of the International Labor Organization, stressed that migrant workers are indispensable in addressing the global labor shortage and contributing to economic growth, noting that ensuring their rights and access to decent work is not only a moral necessity, but also an economic necessity.
